How to take responsibility for your life and get results

Most people are happy to play the blame game. We love to say that something is not perfect because of some external factor that is beyond our control. But what if you had the power to magically change everything? Here’s some news for you: you have the power to change your life, regardless of the external factors that you think is preventing change from happening. Let me show you how to take responsibility for your life and get results.

Do any of these statements look familiar?

  • I hate my job, because my boss is a tyrant.
  • I am in a bad relationship because my partner is selfish.
  • My debt is out of control because I don’t earn enough money.

For most people, one or all of these statements ring true. But what we’re effectively doing is giving other people power over our lives by claiming that our current circumstances are out of our control. And it’s easier that way. It’s easier to blame someone else for your lack, discomfort or unhappiness. But just as a thought exercise, let’s see what happens if you turn those sentences around:

I hate my job, because my boss is a tyrant becomes My boss is a tyrant because I hate my job. Let’s face it, if you are not on purpose and in flow, your boss could be the most amazing employer ever but you will still be unhappy.

I am unhappy in my relationship because my partner is selfish becomes My partner is selfish because I am unhappy in my relationship. That means that your unhappiness is the cause of the behaviour, not the result of it.

My debt is out of control because I don’t earn enough money becomes I don’t earn enough money because my debt is out of control. The debt and spending habits are possible the problem, not the income.

Why taking responsibility is vital

Not all statements in life can be turned around but all circumstances certainly can. By accepting that you, and you alone, are responsible for your current situation, you are not only taking responsibility for your own life. You are also removing power that other people have over you.

But taking responsibility doesn’t imply taking the blame. You are not at fault if you have an abusive partner or unfair employer. You do however have the power to remove yourself from the situation. It is your choice to be in that relationship or job, so if the circumstances are less than ideal, then take responsibility and change it.

This is often easier said than done. Especially if you are in a desperate state, it is difficult to see your way out of it. But by going through this simple exercise of turning the statement around, you will gain insight.

“In the taking of responsibility, we find ourselves.”
